The Burrell Collection
The Burrell Collection is a varied collection of over 8,000 art treasures collected
over the years by Sir William Burrell (1861-1958) a wealthy Glasgow ship owner.
William Burrell sold his shipping interests to pursue his interest in collecting,
which he did until his death at the age of 96 in 1958.
Even back in 1901 when Glasgow staged the International Exhibition Burrell was
the single largest lender for the various displays.
The collection was donated to the city in 1944 with a considerable sum of money
to help build a suitable home for his collection. Eventually a site was found
in the sixties and the project was completed and the Burrell Collection opened
in Glasgow's Pollok Park in 1983.
The collection includes paintings by Rembrandt, Degas, Bellini, Pissaro
and Manet. Make sure you look out for the famous sculpture ‘the thinker' by Rodin.
You will also find many other treasures in the collection which includes ancient
Greek, Egyptian and Roman artefacts and many Oriental and Medieval works. There
are many other treasures from around the world and through the ages simply waiting
for you to discover them in their elegant surroundings set in the beautiful Pollok
Park.
