Gallery Of Modern Art -
GOMA
In 1780 the GOMA building was the home of William Cunninghame
the tobacco lord. William Cunninghame bought all the stocks of Virginia
tobacco he could during the American War of Independence and selling
it later at a vast profit.
In 1827 the building became the Royal Exchange and the
12 giant columns were added.
In 1949 the building was taken over by the council to house Stirlings library
and in 1996 it was refurbished to accommodate the Gallery.
Today the building is now the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA)
a very popular attraction in the city. The inside is divided on four
floors to represent the four elements water, earth, air, and fire.
At the front of the Gallery is a statue of Wellington which has a traffic cone
on Wellington's head more times than not, especially after a Saturday night!
