Provand's Lordship
Opposite
Glasgow Cathedral, Provands's Lordship is the oldest surviving house
in Glasgow . Built in 1471 during the reign of King James for the priest
in charge of St Nicholas Hospital and it later became the townhouse of
the Canon of Barlanark. In 1670 it was extended and since then had various
uses including an alehouse and a barbers. The building was offered to
the City of Glasgow District Council by the Provand's Lordship Society
in 1978. The building is furnished with furniture from the 17 th century
donated by Sir William Burrell (Burrell Collection) so you can get a
great idea what the inside would have looked like in this period.
